Health, Safety and Environment
At Jacobs, we believe the well-being of our people is fundamental to our success. Our passion for safety and our courage to care for one another and our environment inspires mutual respect.
Safety is not what we do, it’s who we are. We call it our way of life, BeyondZero®, our Culture of Caring.
We are proud that in our culture, our people go beyond following rules, procedures and processes. Our goal is beyond driving statistics to zero. We believe our culture will make our people and communities safer and healthier. We look for ways to recognize and mitigate risks, on and off the job. We drive and promote healthy behavior and care for the environment. We have created a true culture of caring where genuine concern for each other makes it impossible to tolerate unsafe conditions or behaviors.
Our HSE performance is enduring, industry leading and world-class.
In 2018 we continued to demonstrate safety excellence with another year of zero employee fatalities at work, as well as a total recordable injury rate of 0.19 per 200,000 hours worked, versus the industry’s most recently reported aggregate rate of 0.22.
In April 2018, Jacobs was awarded a Gold Award in the Mind Workplace Wellbeing Index. The award recognized Jacobs for successfully embedding mental health into our practices and policies and demonstrating a long-term commitment to the mental health of our employees. Additionally, we received a 2018 Business Achievement award in the Social Contribution category from the Environmental Business Journal. These are two of many awards that Jacobs has received relating to our mental health matters program, which continues to develop a more inclusive environment where people feel safe, healthy and supported.
As part of the program, we introduced Positive Mental Health Champions, training our employees in how to guide staff who have mental health concerns or crises, to the appropriate level of help; support fellow employees; and encourage positive mental health throughout the workplace using the Five Ways to Wellbeing:
- Take Notice: Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual.
- Give: Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile.
- Be Active: Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Dance.
- Connect: Learn more about the people around you. Spend time with family, get involved at work, school or in your local community.
- Keep Learning: Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course.
With this new initiative, we signed up 900 mental health champions in 2018, greatly expanding the geographic reach of the program – and now, we have 1,100+ champions across the company, spanning 28 countries and six continents around the world.

You can't run an unsafe company and claim you have integrity. The bottom line benefits of safety should be obvious to everyone.
